About Columbiana

Main Street with Courthouse

While the county seat greatly impacts daytime visitors to Columbiana, visitors flock to Columbiana to experience unique recreational and cultural activities as well.  In partnership with the Shelby County Arts Council and Shelby County Commission, the City of Columbiana constructed a $10 million multi-use arts facility that opened in 2019. Old Mill Square hosts music and arts centric performances of all types and is positioned to be a Central Alabama arts and entertainment destination with 216 seat black box theater, art gallery and studio space. Additional features include a Grand Hall with seating capacity for 500, a multi-purpose outdoor pavilion and a new public park connecting patrons to Main Street.  Beeswax Creek Park is also located in Columbiana and provides for a wealth of recreational opportunities on Lay Lake, which is an annual host site for the Alabama Bass Trail Series and many other fishing tournaments throughout the year. Part of the Alabama Wine Trail, Lewis Lakes Vineyards serves as a tourist attraction for the City as well.

Columbiana is also a Designated Main Street community, which focuses on new and expanding commercial development in the central business district.  Through partnerships with Main Street Alabama and Main Street America, Columbiana City leaders are discovering innovative techniques for breathing new life into aging downtowns.  Main Street Columbiana has witnessed several new businesses open downtown and offers shopping and restaurant options within walking distance of the Courthouse and Old Mill Square.

Economic growth combined with high quality of life has resulted in a demand for new homes in the City.  Therefore, Springs Crossing, a Smith Douglas housing development, broke ground in 2019 with 130 lots.  Phase I is completely sold out with Phase II and III are on track to do the same.  HighPointe Properties, LLC is also working with City officials on plans for a new housing development along Hwy 70 which will result in an additional 226 new homes.

Columbiana hopes to continue this momentum and is actively seeking development projects that will further diversify its economy.  Centrally located, Columbiana is situated 10 miles from I-65 and 13 miles from US HWY 280 with access to rail in some locations.  With progressive leadership and an active Industrial Development Board, the City welcomes the opportunity to assist prospects considering locations in Columbiana.
