Environmental Services

Overview

The Environmental Services Department includes Waste Water Treatment and Sewer services.

Environmental Services performs all of the daily operations of the Waste Water Treatment Plant.  The Columbiana Waste Water Treatment Facility is located on Highway 70.  The facility has the capacity of treating 0.944 million gallons a day and purifies/cleans the sewage to an acceptable standard mandated by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management.  Columbiana has fourteen lift stations, which are used due to the topography of the land, to pump sewage to gravity flow sewer lines to the Waste Water Treatment Plant.  Two of the Environmental Services personnel maintain the treatment plant and two personnel maintain the collection system.  They also perform cleaning of the main sewer line, lift stations, and taking video images of the main sewer line.

Most recently, the Environmental Services Department has installed a new pump station on Highway 70.  In the past two years they have replaced the main sewer line from an 18 inch pipe to a 24 inch pipe from the Highway 25 Bypass to the Treatment Plant.  Phase two of this project is underway.  Phase two will extend the new 24 inch pipe from the Highway 25 Bypass to West College Street.

Environmental Services house of operation are 7:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday.  Environmental Services personnel are on call 24/7 for emergencies.
